Today’s Leadership Winnipeg session personally, was one to remember. The day focused on two pivotal themes: Board governance and self-awareness. The event was a blend of insightful presentation, interactive and candid discussions, all aimed at enhancing our leadership capabilities and driving our community forward.

The Importance of Board Governance

The day kicked off with an inspiring Board Governance training by Kevin Freedman, who underscored the significance of board governance. Board members play a crucial role in steering the company, ensuring that the organization stays true to its mission & vision while navigating the challenges of a dynamic business environment. Boards are also needed to bridge connection between the organization and the community.

We delved into sub-topics such as strategic oversight, qualities that make a good board member, and the importance of diversity on a board. One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of onboarding education and training for new board members which ensures new board members can show up to their roles as expected. A well-governed board is not only a hallmark of a resilient organization but also a competitive advantage in today’s fast-paced world.

Embracing Self-awareness

The afternoon sessions shifted the focus to self-awareness, a skill often overlooked but profoundly impactful. This was a continuation of our first leadership Winnipeg session. Today, we delved deeper into our personal DISC profiles and explored the different driving forces that exist according to Eduard Spranger and how understanding these driving forces can empower each individual to build on their unique strengths both at work and in life.

It was also interesting to hear everyone share their perspectives on their driving forces and some of the significant incidents that drive those forces.

As the day drew to a close, it was clear that board governance and self-awareness go hand in hand. Effective governance requires leaders who are not only strategic thinkers but also self-aware individuals who can inspire and effectively provide direction.

Personally, the day was more than just an event; it was a call to action. I left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to apply what we learned to my day to day.

In conclusion, the day was a resounding success. It reinforced the idea that great leaders are not just born; they are continually made through learning, reflection, and dedication to personal and professional growth. Here’s to a future where the leaders in our community embody the perfect blend of Board governance excellence and self-awareness.
