Leadership Winnipeg Class of 2024-2025

On May 9, 2025, through the Leadership Winnipeg program, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the arts and culture scene of our vibrant city. The day’s focus was on Arts and Culture in Winnipeg. The experience was both enlightening and inspiring, offering a deeper appreciation for the artistic community that thrives here.

Our day began at Prairie Theatre Exchange (PTE), where we were welcomed by Katie Inverarity and Ann Hodges. It was fascinating to hear about their roles and how they collaborate to run the PTE, balancing both administrative and creative responsibilities. Their insights into the inner workings of the theatre were truly eye-opening.

Following their talk, we embarked on a tour of the PTE. The backstage area revealed a world of creativity and meticulous planning that goes into every production. Seeing this behind-the-scenes aspect was a highlight, offering a new perspective on the effort and dedication involved in theatre.

Next, we had the chance to engage with a panel of board members and Executive Directors. They shared their experiences and discussed the dynamics between board members and operating staff. This session was particularly insightful, shedding light on the leadership and governance that support the arts.

Our journey continued at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB), where we were greeted by our classmate Elena Tupyseva. Watching Elena in action and learning about the extensive offerings of the RWB was truly inspiring. Similar to the PTE, the RWB is guided by both an artistic director and an executive director, who work closely to ensure the success of their diverse programs and performances.

The tour of the RWB was another highlight, especially the visit to the costume-making area. I was amazed to discover that all the costumes are made in-house, from scratch. This level of craftsmanship and dedication to detail was impressive and added a new layer of appreciation for the performances.

We ended our day with a presentation from Adam Smoluk of Film Training Manitoba. Adam spoke about his role and the various career opportunities within the film industry. His presentation was engaging and informative, highlighting the diverse and dynamic nature of film production.

Overall, the day was a remarkable journey through Winnipeg’s arts and culture scene. I left with a newfound appreciation for the creative talents and leadership that drive these organizations. The experience has deepened my understanding and admiration for the arts in Winnipeg, and I look forward to exploring more of what our city has to offer.
