Quick Poll: Tell us how we are doing

Our Takeaways from the Provincial Throne Speech

November 21, 2024

On November 19, The Winnipeg Chamber was invited to attend the reading of the Provincial Throne Speech, outlining the government’s agenda for the year ahead. The speech addressed broadly Manitobans’ priorities – notably health care, crime/safety, and economic development – but was light on details as are Throne Speeches typically.

Catch a few of our Chamber’s reactions to the speech at:

In responding to provincial plans to focus on retail covenants concerning groceries, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Loren Remillard said there are more ways the province could be increasing competition.

“What are we doing to create the climate for competition?” Remillard said. “We can play on the edges with legislation, but that really doesn’t address the core issue of why aren’t more businesses in Manitoba.”

The Throne Speech does note a new economic development strategy is forthcoming. While both the Winnipeg and Manitoba Chambers applauded this, we noted more details are needed.
