After experiencing firsthand how unprotected dogs are in cars, Crash Safe Dog by Optimus Gear saw a way to put safety first. They design products to provide real protection, not just restraint. From our product testing to our customer interactions, they manufacture everything in-house, including their patented buckles. We chatted with Andrew Churley at Crash Safe Dog to share a little more on how they are making a real difference in pet safety.
Q. What does Crash Safe Dog by Optimus Gear do?
Crash Safe Dog by Optimus Gear designs and manufactures crash-tested dog harnesses and accessories to keep pets safe in and out of vehicles. Our harnesses eliminate dangerous movement in the car, providing dogs with true protection in the event of a crash. In addition to harnesses, we design leashes and collars that prioritize safety and functionality. We manufacture all of our products in-house right here in Winnipeg, ensuring that every component—from the stitching to our patented buckles—meets the highest quality standards.
Q. What inspired you to start or join your organization, and what drives your passion for this work?
After experiencing firsthand how unprotected dogs are in cars, we saw the need for a harness that truly keeps dogs secure. We searched for a manufacturer that could meet our safety and durability standards but found none—so we designed one ourselves. We built our own production process from the ground up, starting with a few sewing machines and learning every step of the manufacturing process to ensure total quality control. Over time, we expanded our capabilities, machining our own patented Optimus Buckles and refining every detail of our harness system in-house. Our passion comes from knowing we’re helping pet owners drive with confidence, knowing their dogs are safer. Because for us, safety isn’t optional.
Q. What’s something unique or exciting about your business that people might not know?
It’s exciting to take a product from rolls of fabric and sheets of aluminum and turn it into something real. Many people no longer know what it’s like to create something out of nothing. We’re proud to be some of the few who still do. Every part of our process, from crafting the Optimus Buckle to testing our harnesses, is done by hand with precision and care. We’re committed to producing quality, safety-tested products that pet owners can trust.
Q. What upcoming projects, initiatives, or events are you most excited about?
We’ve been working closely with Canine Health Canada on our Rescue Attachment, which is designed to keep dogs safe and secure during emergency situations. This attachment is a perfect addition to our crash-safe harness and is something we’re very excited to share with our customers. We’re also thrilled to soon launch our cat harness, designed with the same commitment to quality. It’s an ideal choice for pet owners who want their cats to be secure and comfortable. We’re preparing for several upcoming events, including the Cottage Country’s Lake and Cabin Show and the Winnipeg Home + Garden Show, where we’ll meet new customers and showcase our products.
Q. Can you share a favourite quote, piece of advice, or a personal motto that inspires you?
“No country is ever successful in the long term without a really strong and vibrant manufacturing base.” – Alan Mulally.
This quote resonates deeply with us at Crash Safe Dog. As a company that designs and manufactures all of our products in-house right here in Winnipeg. We are driven by the belief that a strong local manufacturing base is not only vital to our success but to the future of the community as well. By keeping production in Canada, we ensure that we can maintain quality control, create meaningful jobs, and contribute to the growth of our local economy.
Q. How has being a member of The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce benefited you or your organization?
Being part of The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce has given us valuable opportunities to connect with other local businesses, share our mission, and gain insights from experienced entrepreneurs.
It’s helped us build relationships that support our growth and given us access to resources that strengthen our business strategy.
We’re incredibly grateful to have been chosen as the 2024 Spirit of Winnipeg winner—this recognition means the world to us and our team!
Q. What advice would you give to someone new to your industry or considering joining The Chamber?
Take your shot, talk to people, and don’t be afraid to ask what you think are “dumb” questions. Growth comes from stepping out of your comfort zone every day. Only recently did we go from having a cool product to building a real company, and those changes didn’t happen in isolation—they came from engaging with others. People are good. Don’t be afraid to offer help, and don’t hesitate to accept it when it’s offered. Joining The Chamber is a great way to connect, learn, and grow together.
