Election 2025: What We’re Asking of Canada’s Next Federal Government

April 23, 2025

Time is ticking, and record numbers of Canadians have already cast their votes in Canada’s federal election. At The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, we’re looking for a federal government committed to setting our economy and country on a path to long-term success.

Elections offer an opportunity for reevaluation — a chance to assess how Canada can seize opportunities to foster future economic growth.

At The Chamber, our organization is committed to building a stronger, more vibrant Winnipeg. We continually update our policies in collaboration with our members to ensure we stand ready to advocate on behalf of the business community; creating a stronger economy and better future for all Canadians.

In the upcoming federal election, we are looking for a leader who will address: Economic growth and productivity, trade and tariff policy, community safety, affordable housing and downtown revitalization.

Economic Growth and Productivity

Driving productivity is key to the success of Canada’s future economy, serving as a vital tool to combat rising inflation and elevate standards of living across the country.

Our policy position recommends that federal leadership streamline immigration pathways for skilled workers and with working with other levels of government to remove interprovincial trade barriers, empower business innovation and enhance Winnipeg’s investment appeal.

Trade and Tariff Policy

As global trade norms continue to shift, it is crucial that our economy remains strong and adaptable to handle these changes.

To respond quickly and advocate for our members while trade tensions heightened, The Chamber conducted a survey in collaboration with the Chamber network to shape our advocacy efforts.

The result of this survey formed the basis for our current tariff policy. We recommend that the federal government increase advocacy with the U.S. — the top request from Manitoba’s business community at (47%) — and empower businesses through these challenges with relief programs, improved trade infrastructure and prioritizing buying Canadian.

Affordable Housing

Access to affordable housing for all residents is a key indicator of economic health and a pressing need for Canada.

In collaboration with our members’ The Chamber developed policy recommendations for federal leadership to support the development of affordable and sustainable communities through harmonizing building codes and incentivizing the development of affordable housing through low-interest loans.

Downtown Revitalization

Downtown Winnipeg is the heart of our city and an economic engine for Winnipeg bringing in tax revenue far beyond its land area.

To ensure the area thrives, our policy recommendations for the federal government are to build a stronger downtown with targeted investments in large infrastructure projects such as transit, net-zero buildings and tourism.

Community Safety

At The Chamber, we believe a safer Winnipeg starts with people across communities being supported, resourced, and trusted. Public safety is crucial as we continue to build a healthy, vibrant city that supports economic growth.
