Major Douglass enrolled in the CAF in July 1973 as an Air Defence Technician, and was subsequently employed at a number of Long Range Radar units on the former Pine Tree Line, including a six month tour with UNEF in the Middle East. He was posted to CFB Cornwallis in June 82 as a recruit squad instructor. While working in Cornwallis, he re-mustered to the Armoured Corps and was assigned to the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s) in Petawawa. The unit left Petawawa in the summer of 85 and deployed to Lahr Germany in a unit rotation. While serving in Germany, Major Douglass was selected for scholarship and commission through the University Training Plan. He proceeded to the University of Manitoba in 89 to complete his undergraduate degree. He was commissioned as a personnel selection officer in June 91. He served as the Base Personnel Selection Officer in Winnipeg, Shilo, Borden, and again in Winnipeg, as well as a six month tour of Bosnia in 2000. In 2006, while serving in Winnipeg as the 17 Wing PSO, he chose to transfer from the regular to the P Res component to accept a job with Director General Alternate Dispute Resolution as the manager of the DND conflict management program, providing services for Manitoba, Sask. and Lakehead Region. During this time, commencing in 2007, he took on the extra duty of parading voluntarily with Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, one of Winnipegs’ two storied Reserve Infantry Regiments; first as Adjutant, then as Deputy Commanding Officer of the Winnipeg Infantry Tactical Group. He was invested into the Order of Military Merit as a member in Nov 2008. He served as the last Canadian Detainee Officer in Afghanistan for Task Force 5-11 in Afghanistan, June to Dec 2011, the closeout of Canadian operations at Kandahar Airfield. On return to Canada, he completed his full time contract with Conflict Management, then converted to Class A service in July 2012 to focus all his energy on the Primary Reserve unit. Major Douglass was appointed as an Honourary Aide –de – Camp to the Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba in June 2013, and retained that appointment until retirement. In 2014, he was one of the principals involved in the Valour Road Victoria Cross exhibit at the Manitoba Museum, commemorating the centennial of The First World War. He retired from the Canadian Forces on 7 Sep 2015, after 42 years and two months of service to the Crown.
