Jaco Ishulutaq (b. February 15, 1951) started carving at the age of sixteen. He learned by watching his grandfather and has since made sculptures from antler, ivory, whalebone, and more particularly, stone. His favorite subjects include people, birds, and other animals. He also enjoys portraying images from stories told by his grandfather, as well as images from his imagination. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally for over thirty years. Jaco’s mother Elisapee, brother Lazalusie, and sisters Rosie and Jessie are all active artists in Pangnirtung and Iqaluit. The Gallery Shop would like to thank Canadian Arctic Producers for making this exhibition possible as well as Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association for their generous support.
