2010 State of the City to benefit charities
Agape Table and Osborne House to benefit from Mayor’s address
Winnipeg – Jan. 7, 2010 – Committed to assisting local charities provide outreach and support, today Mayor Sam Katz along with The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce pledged to donate 50 per cent of the net proceeds from the 2010 Mayor’s State of the City address, which will be sponsored by MTS Allstream, to Agape Table and Osborne House.
“The State of the City is a prime opportunity to assist our local charities as they make a difference in our community,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I am proud to work with The Chamber to raise awareness and assist those who work on the frontlines every day to make our city better.”
“The Chamber is pleased to once again partner with Mayor Katz on an initiative that will directly help two very important organizations in our community,” said Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dave Angus.
Barbara Judt, executive director of Osborne House, said: “Osborne House Inc. is delighted to be part of Mayor Sam Katz’s 2010 State of the City event. The dollars received from all of you will make a positive impact for the women and children who live with domestic violence in their lives.”
Mark Courtney, general manager of Agape Table, said: “Agape Table is excited to be a part of Mayor Katz’s 2010 State of the City Address. Agape Table is a community nutrition program that provides emergency and community food services to men, women and children in the inner city. Funds raised at this event will help us to continue nourishing the body, mind and spirit of those in need in our community.”
The Mayor and Chamber began a partnership by honoring the memory of Rev. Harry Lehotsky with proceeds in total of over $8,500 from the 2007 and 2008 State of the City addresses going towards New Life Ministries. Last year, the Mayor and Chamber raised $20,000 that benefited the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, Siloam Mission, and New Life Ministries.
The State of the City address has traditionally been the best attended event that The Chamber holds on an annual basis and with the added incentive of raising significant dollars for two worthwhile charities the aim is to make this the biggest Chamber event yet.
The State of the City address will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010.
