INCOMING CHAIR TO FOCUS ON OPPORTUNITIES FOR
BUSINESS SUCCESS IN COMING YEAR

Chamber Swears in Judy Murphy of Meyers Norris Penny LLP as 2010-2011 Chair

September 30, 2010 – 2010-2011 Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Chair Judy Murphy says strengthening the voice of the business community and providing businesses with greater opportunities to be successful in the future will be key focuses in her year as Chair of The Chamber.

“In the coming year through collaborative initiatives like Yes! Winnipeg and Centrallia 2010, The Chamber will continue to work with its partners to tell the world about Winnipeg and bring the world to Winnipeg, so local businesses can benefit from change - new markets, new ideas, a growing economy and expanded tax base,” said Murphy.

Murphy of Meyers Norris Penny LLP was sworn in as the 117th Chair of The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce today by Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz. Murphy added that in the coming year The Chamber will be aggressive in strengthening our connections with local decision-makers and making sure our voice is heard through an increased focus on policy development.

“The Chamber will be extremely active in the upcoming municipal and provincial elections to ensure that issues important to the business community are addressed,” said Murphy. “Also high on our priority list will be to build new partnerships and collaborate with others to strengthen the community as a whole.”

Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dave Angus added that even in the difficult economic realties of the past year the membership of The Chamber has continued to grow.

“We are extremely grateful for the faith that our members have in our organization,” added Angus. “As we move out of the recession we will continue to stimulate discussion and ensure the priorities of the business community, whether it’s the economy, business performance or strategies to facilitate trade and investment are addressed.”

Angus added that in the coming year The Chamber’s efforts will be focused in five main areas: Being a Leading Voice of Business, Engaging and Involving Our Members, Nurturing and Developing Talent, Empowering the Private Sector to Make a Mark on the World and Planning for the Future.

The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1873, is the largest organization representing the voice of business in Winnipeg.
